Is quattro really banned from Rally?
This maybe a stupid noob question but I've been hearing it from time to time and I have trouble believing that an all wheel drive system can be banned. Sorry if this has been discussed before or this is a useless post I'm just curious.

Not in rally, the a4's were banned from touring cars in europe due to the FIA not being able to really govern how to restrict the success the a4's had in the mid and later nineties. They later resurfaced in america sports car racing and the speed challenge where those rules dont apply.

No, Quattro never was banned from rally. EntireB group with closed because it was extremely dangerous.
Rally is a VERY expensive sport, it is somewhat close in costs to Formula 1 racing. WRC car costs around $500,000, don’t forget about parts, service, and fuel. Which costs around $16 per liter (1/4 gallon approximately)
Company decided that it is more beneficial for its promotion and development to perform in Le Mans series and touring cars in Europe, which are both extremely popular there. And Audi is doing very good in both.
Quattro gave birth to all generations of rally legend cars that we can see on rally roads nowadays.

Yeah like people already said Group B was stopped because it was pretty much unlimited and getting way too ridiculous. And to clear up any confusion Audi's model called the Quattro was their competing Group B car, not to be confused with Audi's AWD system called Quattro.
Anyway, even though Audi doesn't back any teams in rally anymore there are still plenty of people who rally them.
