My drivers door doesn't close easily. You have to give it a real pull or push when opening and closing it. I know the switch and handle moves freely, so it's gotta be an alignment issue. Plus, the metal floor plate is a little scratched form where the door has been rubbing on it due to it hanging too low.

Has anyone had this happen on their car? Any suggestions on how to fix this? As usual.... Thanks a bunch for your help!

Good lord... heh, I Had that happen on my eagle talon, but thats a chrysler product... I expected the doors to fall off at any given moment. But on an audi? Scary! Take it into a body shop and get a quote... they are good at stuff like that, and good body shops are reasonable. They will probably tell you whats wrong, when they quote you... and you can go from there: either do it yourself, or pay them.

 

Too lazy to see what the door jamb looks like, so

Have you checked to see that the hinge bolts are tight. Is the striker plate in the correct position or does it need to be adjusted.

All you need are a set of torx bits to adjust the striker plate.

 

This happened to my GTI, and now my '01 Avant. When you push the door right up to the point before it latches, and then look at the top outside corner of the door you will be able to see how much the door is sagging. If it is, even an eighth of an inch, adjusting the latch won't help.

It's possible the hinge pins are worn, but it's more likely that the car itself has settled and flexed enough to allow the constant use of the driver's door to misalign itself.

On my GTI I had to loosen the bolts on the hinges that screw into the car (not the door) and then propped up the corner of the door with various objects (paint can and bricks) as high as it would and then tightened the bolts. The door was so perfectly aligned when I was done I felt foolish for not fixing it sooner. (like before all the paint wore off of the bottom of the opening).

I'm going to try the same repair today on the avant. I'll let you know how it goes.

I found you post hoping to find a common problem that required some simple part replacement. Oh well...

 

Old topic, I know - but reviving it anyway.

I'm going to try to fix this today.. Isn't it best to just close the door and do it from the insied? Loosening the bolts to the hinge, then retightening them?
