so what if you have esp but the old badge? i have noticed that on a few cars anyone?

Yup, that's a definite way. And you can't always go off of the badges as well because I've heard of a couple of '01.5 cars that came from the factory with new badge on the gauge and old on the rear or whatever like you saw here.
