Default CV Boots

Dealer says both front CV boots have some heavy cracking and recommended that I have them replaced soon. They gave me an estimate of $740 to replace both.

I need input on this estimate. High, low, about right?

I got my front CV boots replaced at a dealship (unfortunately) for approx. $650. This was ~14 months ago. I just took it back to the same dealership for another service and they informed me that the left side CV boot clip was gone and had to be "re-sealed". This they charged me another $150 for - go figure.

All in all, it has now cost me $800... which I probably could have gotten for half of that if I've gone to an independent audi repair place. I'm never going back to the dealship again (needless to say)

Yeah, I got quoted $440 per side from the dealership. I went to a smaller shop and they wanted about $200 per side. I'll still take it to the dealership for the tough stuff. It's a lot easier to get them to correct their mistakes.

yeah go independent audi dealer has a reputation for taking people to the cleaners for easy jobs. I got a shop to replace not just the boot boot but the whole outer cv joint for around 200. save yourself some money and time and go with a local shop (not ntb) but a reputable shop thats where you get your deals.

How much did they charge for the part(s)?
I also were told that both boots on the left front are torn and that the cv shaft needs to be replaced. That independent AUDI shop quoted me $250 for the part(cv shaft) and 2hrs a' $88 for the labor which would add up to ~$900 (with clamps, etc.) for both sides and is considerably more than what I am seeing here in the posts...

I got a quote of $580 (includes loaner car for the day) from an independant audi repair shop and have scheduled for next week. For anyone in the Boston area, it's Mings Audi Repair (ads on this forum).
I spoke with someone who goes there regularly and the word is their top notch. (based on their willingness to accomodate my schedule and offer a loaner, I'm agreeing so far)

Wow... I'm liking my mechanic more and more.... he just replaced both of my front boots for about $350. (They were both shredded)
