100k maint. on 01 4.2? ***NOOB WARNING***
i did a few searches and couldn't really find what I was looking for.
I just went over 100k and need to get maint. done on the car. Could you fellas clue me in on everything I would want to get looked at/changed. I plan on doing the TB and everything(don't know everything I should get done at that time either), so if you could help me with that it would be greatly appreciated. I will do a search for that in a few days though. judging from the service manual that has the intervals, i guess I am looking at getting everything done at the 10k and 20k mark. Maint at 10k Engine: change oil Oil filter: Replace Cooling system: check coolant level Exhaust system: check for damage and leaks Engine: On Board Diagnostic test Doors: Lubricate door hinge mechanism (did this today acually) Battery: Check electrolyte leve and add if necessary Windshield wiper and washer: check fluid leve and add if necessary Automatic Shift lock: check operation including park/neutral switch Tires and Spare wheel: check condition and pressure (rotate also I can assume) Brake System: Check for damage and leaks, thickness of pads and brake fluid level Drive shafts: check boots Road test: check braking, kick-down, steering, electrical, heating and ventilation systems, AC and power accessories Service reminder indicator display: reset Lights: check Maint at 20k Front axle: check dust seals on ball joints and tie rod ends, check tie rods Haladex Clutch:Change Oil and filter Auto Transmission: check for leaks Transmission final drive: check oil level, add if necessary Dust and pollen filter: Replace Head lights: adjust If anyone actually reads this, thanks for looking. I copied that from the manual i have. Please let me know if you know anything I missed just to be safe. I am going to get the Bentley manual and look into doing all of this myself in the future, just right now I don't have the time. At the least I need to learn how to change the oil in this beast. |

Here is the list of what I think should be done at 100k. The biggest thing you are missing from your list is the timng belt. In addition, as long as you are having the timing belt done you should also have the water pump done. 1. Engine Oil / Oil Filter: Change oil and replace oil filter 2. Cooling System: Check coolant level. Add coolant if necessary. 3. Exhaust System: Check for damage and leaks. 4. Engine, On-Board Diagnostic: Check Diagnostic Trouble Code Memory. Purge if necessary. 5. Engine: Check for leaks 6. Air cleaner: Clean housing and replace filter element 7. Snow screen for air cleaner: Clean 8. Battery: Check electrolyte level. Add if necessary 9. Dust and pollen filter: Replace 10. Manual transmission and final drive: Check for leaks 11. Automatic transmission and final drive: Check for leaks 12. Sunroof: Clean guide rails and lubricate 13. Haldex clutch: Change oil and filter 14. Windshield Wiper and Washer / Headlight washer: Check adjustment and 15. function check fluid level and add if necessary. 16. Wiper arm pivot points: Lubricate 17. Tires and Spare Wheel: Check for wear and damage. Check pressure. 18. Tire repair set: Check renewal date. 19. Service Reminder Indicator Display: Reset display. 20. Lights: Check the lights. Check Headlight adjustment 21. Brake System: Check for damage and leaks. Check thickness of pads and brake fluid level. 22. Drive Shafts: Check boots. 23. Doors: Lubricate door hinge mechanism. 24. Trunk hinges: Lubricate trunk hinge mechanism 25. Visual Check: Check undercarriage for damage 26. Power steering: Check fluid level 27. Spark plugs: Replace 28. Continuously variable transmission (multitronicâ„¢): Change ATF 29. Ribbed belt: Replace 30. Timing belt and timing belt tensioning system: Replace 31. Timing belt: Replace 32. Front and Rear Axle: Check excessive play 33. Front and Rear Axle: Check dust seals on ball joints and tie rod ends. Check tie rods 34. Direct shift gearbox (DSG): Change oil and replace filter element 35. Road Test: Check braking, kick-down, steering, electrical, heating & ventilation 36. systems, air conditioning, Automatic Shift Lock (ASL) operation and power accessories |

The timing belt is critical - do it soon. Change the TB, water pump, tensioners, thermostat, antifreeze, and serpentine at the same time. A good source is www.blauparts.com. They sell a complete kit less one tensioner, but included antifreeze. There are a couple similar sources that are probably equally good. Make sure the water pump has ametal impeller.
When I replaced my clutch and flywheel at 89k, I also had them replace the transmission, tranfer case, and rear differential fluids. Otherwise it's been Mobil1 oil and filter every 7-8k and cleaning/re-oiling the K&N every 20k. I'm just under 114k with no recent problems. |
RE: 100k maint. on 01 4.2? ***NOOB WARNING***
Whether or not I get the timing belt done at the same time depends on my funds when I go. If I do the 100k in a week, ill have to just do the 100k. If I wait 2 or 3 weeks, I will be able to get it all done, which would be preferrable.
Thanks so much Kevin and ppgoal for your input. I just got a quote from my dads mechanic, who just did an A6 timing belt a week ago. it was $800 for labor, doesn't have prices on the parts yet. I dont know why if he just did it recently... I think he will let me buy the parts though. I am going to go see him tomorrow and see what he says. |
RE: 100k maint. on 01 4.2? ***NOOB WARNING***
Maybe I missed this, but shouldn't the brake fluid be replaced if it has never been done? Suggested replacement interval is 2 years regardless of mileage.
I would also suggest changing the fuel filter at 20 bucks for the part. Generally this is not listed as a service part, but worth it. Also worth getting your fuel injectors cleaned. |

I think im going to be getting a kit from blauparts. The only thing that is confusing me is where it says the kit you need depends on the VIN number... either
2001-2004 A6 Sedan - Quattro w/ 4.2L 8 Cylinder 40 Valve Engine Code AWN > Starting with Vin 105001 or 2000-2001 A6 Sedan - Quattro w/ 4.2L 8 Cylinder 40 Valve Engine Code AWN > Starting with Vin 130001 and up to Vin 105000 My VIN ends in 132148. I may be really tired but looks like i don't fit in either of them. ORIGINAL: ppgoal The timing belt is critical - do it soon. Thinking it should be 150000 and 150001. |

Your vehicle comes after 130000 so I would look at 2004-2005 for the kit. Call Chris Semple at Force Five Automotive in Concord NH 603 223-6700 and see if he can suply the kit you need. |
