Default 2001 allroad tranny issues

hello!! i have a 2001 allroad automatic, a week ago my tranny started sliping in 1st and 2nd gear, yesterday i brought it to an audi dealer a couple hours away to do a fluid change... after i dropped the car, they call me saying the cost of the repair will be more than the car itself so i should sell it.
They took a sample of the fluid (it was full i guess) and it was black with lots of metal shavings, they said the transmission and the torque converter need to be replace and it wasn't worth it.
what should i do? If i do the flush, could the gears be ok? or sell it like they told me in an action and don't worry about it and buy a new car??

One important point here is....how much do you love the allroad? The most likely culprit is the torque convertor - this is a known issue. The cost of a new convertor is several hundred dollars, but the labor to change it is what really drives the cost up. If you can find out if indeed BOTH the convertor and trans are the issue...the costs are significant. If the issue is just the convertor and you can do the work yourself or have good independent shop do it....it may be worth doing. A fluid flush will not help at this point.
