Default 2005 Allroad 4.2L - need help sourcing a secondary air pump

I bought this 2005 Allroad 4.2L about 9 months ago, knowing it needed some work.

The secondary air injection pump (SAIP) was making that spaceship sound, until about a week ago, and then it stopped. Then after a few days the CEL went on and VAG-COM showed codes related to secondary air flow.

So, probably the pump died, or if it's the relay, I want to replace the pump anyway to get rid of that embarrassing spaceship sound.

I got the pump out without too much fuss, and now I need to buy a new one. I'm a little confused about this.

My existing pump is part# 079906601B. Apparently this is no longer made. I haven't called a dealer yet, but a dealer website shows that they have 079906601F as the correct part for my car, and they note that the "B" revision is an old alternate part number. They also want $500 for the pump.

My pump is attached to the mounting bracket by rubber bumpers such that one end of the bumpers plug into the pump without any bolts.

On looking at the parts diagram for the "F" revision, it appears that on this version the bumpers screw into the pump instead. Seems like this would mean getting new bumpers as well. The dealer wants $52 for either one or three bumpers (it's not clear to me).

I found a VW part 06A959253B that is also a Pierburg pump that looks exactly like mine, but apparently the alternate part# for that is 078906601B (e.g., 078 first digits instead of mine which is 079). My Allroad is not listed as a compatible model, but other Audi models with the same 4.2L engine are listed.

I can get this VW part for around $120, instead of $500 (+bumpers seems like) for current "F" revision of the Allroad pump.

Does anyone know if the VW part would actually be okay to use?

the SAI pumps do fail from time to time, and can be tricky to replace. i know for at least the turbo engines there are some DIY workarounds to eliminate the pump entirely with out it throwing a CEL. this might be your best way to go. i know if mine craps out i have no intention of replacing it.

anyone know if theres a SAIP elimination for the 4.2s?

Default VW pump worked

I had forgotten about this forum post, but by the way the VW pump worked perfectly. Got it for $160 on eBay, received it the next day and put it in. That was several months ago, no problems since.
