Key Fob Confusion
I'm on FleaBay and it lists the fob for my Allroad (2003) as 4D0 837 231 E. However, when I opened mine up, it is an M, not an E. I just bought this vehicle and it only has the one key which doesn't work, even with a fresh battery. I tried syncing it by hitting one of the buttons once and then manually unlocking it, but nothing. Do I have the correct transmitter?
Thanks,
Greg
Thanks,

I have the exact key. My new to me 2004 allroad 4.2L came with one key, but luckily it works.
I saw the same keys on ebay and was tempted, but upon opening mine it has the M suffix also.
I did find some "M's" on ebay, but I plan to call a dealer to find out their story/price for a spare key.
I hope to get some answers next week.
Have you found any more info?
Thanks.

The E's are for 04 and older A6 cars, not allroads, they get P's or M's depending on the year. There is bad info on ebay, posted up to be sold by people that don't know or research what they have.
I called my dealer and per my VIN I indeed need the M code key. I think I'm just going to stick with the dealer for this unless I can find a vendor on here with genuine parts. Still have to go to dealer for cutting and programming though(!).

I finally got time to call a dealership, VW can't help.
Local Audi dship says they want in person;
Proof of ownership,
existing remote key,
VIN.
They order the
keys pre-cut from Audi. cost= $64
The transmitter cost = $80
Programming cost = $50
Total = $194
Takes only 2 days to get the keys. They reprogram all your keys with new codes at that time.
I ordered a remote with new key and proper #'s for $40 on ebay, so maybe I can save $40 that way.
I'm trying to find a locksmith that can cut and program it cheaper.

Progress;
Local locksmith was able to use his machine to get the correct immobilizer PIN, but couldn't program the key for some reason.
Only cost me $10 to get a key cut, without programming.
I used a VAG-Commander dongle and program to also get the SKC PIN, which turned out to be the same # the locksmith got on his machine.
My Vag-com was able to program the original key without trouble but the meas. blocks indicated that the EBAY key I bought would not communicate with the immobilizer.
I'm going to get another chip for less than $10 and see if I can program it too.
The inconvenience factor is high, but the comparable cost is lower than the dealer, if I can get it working.
Interesting that the EBAY key I bought will open the door even un-programmed, and will start the car too. My research indicates that the car will start with a non-programmed key only once after a programmed key was previously used. Good for an emergency I guess.
