Default Where is the Compressor?

I have a 2004 Allroad which I think has a faulty compressor. It takes FOREVER to get the car up off of level 1 in the beginning of my drive each morning. I'm pretty sure I also have a leak in at least one airspring, but I'd like to check out the compressor first.

I keep hearing the compressor is located just forward of the spare tire but when I looked under carpet covering the aft of the car, I didn't see anything. Is it under a hatch I didn't notice? Do you reach it from beneath the car, rather than from inside? I've ordered the shop manual for my car (which will answer this question) but it won't arrive for a few days yet.

Thanks!

It's definitely beneath the car. Arnott has a good manual for the replacement of the compressor with pics.

Here's the link:
