Thanks for the racing offer. I'd take just being able to drive my own car at the moment. The Konis are already purchased and on the way. I'm sure that I will love them very much and the handling will be very good.
Hey, why don't you make a vacation trip to LA, and then we'll race! Much better racing highways out here.

Cheers!

I would say go for the 3.2.
I have just had the same debate myself and looked at the S3, the 3.2 and the 2.0T. Quattro was a "required option" and DSG preferred, but the thing that ultimately swung it was talking to people about the ride and power delivery.
The sport suspension on the cars is "Hard", but the S3 suspension is even harder (IMHO) and if you want the car for longer distance cruising as well as being a hooligan, from time to time. I would also recommend going for the Sport rather than the S Line as you can then spec the car with the 17" wheels rather than the 18" wheels which makes the ride significantly more pleasant and did not alter its handling that much (IMHO). It also makes the car much more of a wolf in sheeps clothing >:-)
Now, why go for the 3.2? Well, when you feel the power delivery in the 3.2 and hear the engine noise, it is superb. I have friend with a new Golf GTI and he is basically regretting not buying the R32 as the performance isn't exactly what he wanted and didn't want to remap the car.
I have bought the 3.2 Quattro Sport and then spec'd it up with Xenons, Nappa leather, Nav, Bose etc. - It is due in the next 2-3 weeks and therefore I am not an expert. But I have had A3s before and thought that the 3.2 quattro was superb but did not want to compromise comfort too much as I intend to keep this car longer than I normally would.
Having said that, if I wanted a car for short journeys on good roads then I would have bought the S3 because it is an S3 and a superb car as the engine and front end are that much lighter and it does handle like it is on rails.

I would love the 3.2, could not justify the price, money is too often part of the recipe...
Oops - Sorry guys didn't know they weren't available in the US
I have just spent a week in Central Europe trying to change gear with the door handle as I live in the UK - deeply embarassing

No harm done, to be honest, except for the steering wheel on the wrong side and the prohibitive pricing, we are just envious of the options you have...I agree with everything you said though, if you can afford, go with more. The only reason for a 2.0T is the MT and better mileage... My opinion for what it matters.
I was in Houston 3 weeks ago and the cab drivers were all complaining about Gas being nearly $3 a gallon. I explained that in the UK petrol prices are circa $9 a gallon at current exchange rates.
So, I wouldn't think mpg would be such a huge issue in the US. I worked it out at circa £500 ($1000) a year doing circa 12000 miles per year so basically £10 per week for all that extra fun :-)

The other thing which I would say is that the S3 comes with a black headlining which I think makes the car very dark inside and therefore I woulod opt for the 3.2 Sport and then spec it back up to S3 levels/S Line levels. Just a personal preference.
I test drove both cars the other day and I like the 2.0T much better. It was quicker and lighter. The 3.2 just felt heavy and slow. Check out my new question on 2006 vs 2007 A3. I am looking to buy both used. The 2007 has less miles but also less features. Let me know what you think!
