Default A3 2.0T with PZEV rating

Was browsing around Audi dealers websites and noticed one dealer had some A3 2.0T’s listed with PZEV ratings. Then I checked over at Edmunds and they have them listed there to as a separate model too, I don’t recall seeing it there before. Still spec’d at 200hp and 22/29mpg, is there any difference or did the car just qualify for the rating?

Its a different motor. Its a chain drivin instead of belt driven 2.0. For now its only sold in areas that are tougher on emmisions. Its coming for 50 state thou.

Say what? IIRC, all 2.0T engines use a timing chain. Yes, no?

Has anyone else hear anything about this? And how can one go about verifying if their current 2.0T is chain driven or belt? I will definitely be doing the happy dance if I know I do not have to do a timing belt change. My Bimmer had a chain and it was great - the wifey's suburban assault vehicle has a chain. Great news.

Default Well..., damn!

Folks have been telling me since the 2.0T first came out that the cams are chain driven (hence my previous post). I'm quite sure that I've been told literally dozens of times thatVW/Audi abandoned the timing belt back when they moved their blown I4-Turbo from 1.8 liters to 2.0 liters, and so I just headed out to prove it.

What I found:
[ul][*]Napa sells a timing belt for the 2007 A3 2.0T engine: http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPage...elt+-+Camshaft[*]The forums over at VW-Vortexare currently down so that was no help[*]Then the most damning of all, a press release from VW that lists the specs of the new Eos. Check out the "Engine Design" section on page 13: http://media.vw.com/press_kits_detai...ection_id=1805[/ul]
To say that I'm not even a little bit fond of timing belts in an understatement. I'm going to have to decide if I still want to proceed on the two new A3s. Grumble, grumble, grumble. [:@]

Looking like the answer is indeed belt driven based on your findings and: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3648537

Was also down for me this morning as well. But I think this is the thread you would have stumbled onto

Also the fact that ive taken one off to do a water pump. Ive actually had the thing in my hand. On the plus side they are actually going to put the chain on the front of the engine this time. On the 4.2 chain driven engines, the chain is on the trans side of the engine. Trans removal is required for almost everything having to do with the chain.

Ok its a belt.
Does anyone know if the 2.0T engine is an interference type engine?

Given the compression ratio of this little mill, I'd bet 99.4% odds that it's an interference engine.
