I did and it worked great. Very simple to do and then I added some velcro to the plate that lifts up to reveal the spare tire since that would bounce sometimes too.

 

Lot of trouble for a simple problem.I stuck a 3/4" x 3/16" adhesive rubber button on the hatch where it contacts the shelf (at the indentation).- Voila; no more rattle. Mine was a Bay audio speaker pad, but your friendly local hardware has lots of similar stuff..
