Default A3 revving problems

I have a 1998 A3 1,6 L. Its gone aproximately 170,000 km.

Anyways, i have problems with the car revving on its own when idle. Its usually fine the first 3-4 minutes i drive but after that it always gets to around 4000-5000 rpm's on its own every time its idle. If i then keep driving it will also do that when in gear. In first gear it will go to 3100 rpm's by itself and stay there. Aprox 2100 by itself when i 2 gear.

Also, when I stop its very hard to start again. Usually at least 3-4 attempts. It also seems to be running bad on low rpm's when this occurs.
This usually last for at least 15 minutes of driving before it suddenly stops.. At least its done that the last few days.. any ideas??

Thanks:-)

maybe your car is just tired of being Manual, it wants to go Automatic now =)

i suggest getting it fixed professionally instead of going on forums to find the solution.

I don't know about european spec cars, but on this side of the pond we plug them into laptops with VAG-COM. I'd extract the codes and maybe we or Avant80 if they are euro specific because its a 1.6L could help diagnose them (he's in the UK)
