a3 towing capabilities
Hi there,
I have an a3 2.0T and the next week I will be moving to another state (I am living in the US). My question is: Can I do towing with my a3?
I bet the engine is powerful enough, but for some reason doesn't seem to be possible to do it in the US?
Thanks in advance,
David

RE: a3 towing capabilities
I don't know the specific answer to your question about whether the A3 is suitable for towing, but this tutorial on torque from Howstuffworks.com taught me that engine specs are complicated and not just to trust raw numbers like "horsepower" when trying to figure out stuff like towing capacity.
Good luck!

I believe the manual should tell you the towing capacity. If I remember correctly it is 2000 lbs raw weight, and somewhere around 100 lbs tongue weight? Of course these figures are also dependent on the Class of hitch you put on the vehicle.
I installed a pretty simple Class I hitch on my A3 for the sole purpose of installing a hitch-mount bike rack. It worked great!

Hey Joel,
Sorry I don't have any pics, and my car is currently in the junkyard. I had just put the hitch on a few months back, I believe it was a "Curtis" brand I found online and then I had someone local install it.
But if you look at the link above provided by KrazyBoi you should get an idea.
My hitch ended up being a 1 1/4" setup, as opposed to a 2". Not a big deal for the bike racks, but maybe more of a deal for pulling a trailer.

a3 towing capabilities
Hi All,
I just wanted to know if there were quite a few people who used their A3 to tow and if so how it affects the car over time. I have 4 German Shepherds and I train twice a week at a place that is 2 hours away (highway). I wanted to get a dog trailer ( it weighs 700 lbs empty and probably around 1000lbs fully loaded). I wondered if anyone had an idea if getting a trailer would be a bad idea....the alternative is to drive two cars all the time.
Thanks
