Default Acceleration Problems - Audi A3 1.6 1999

i recently purchased a T plate audi a3 1.6

i thought the issue had gone away (wishful thinking)for the last few days the car has been great but the problem came up again today. Whilst accelerating the car seems to lose power..when ive got my foot down u can see on the speedometer the speed drops then picks up again..mainly in 2nd,3rd, 4th gears. its like when im trying to pick up speed the acceleration misses a beat, even whilst idle the car feels slightly jerky, as if it wants to stall but doesnt, u can even feel the the accelerator pulling slightly by itself.

what could it be? another thing ive noticed is when ive stopped at the lights the rev counter seems to be moving when my foot is nowhere near the accelerator.

pity none of this came up when i tested the car when i bought it!

can ne1 help/has ne1 else had this issue?

I have a 1.6 sport a3 1998which has also been having the problem. At first after i purchased the car it started reving itself if that makes sense. It felt like it want to stall whilst it was idle at traffic lights or when i come to stop. It went away for a while then came back. If you or anyone has found out it much be greatly appreciated it you could contact me
