Default Audi A3 reliability - better stats

I wanted more up-to-date car reliability information that included actual repair rates. So in late 2005 I started getting people together to make this possible. TrueDelta now updates actual repair frequencies, not just dots, four times a year, to track cars closely as they age.

We've had excellent participation by Audi owners, with over 2,000 signed up. But more remain needed to cover all model years of the A3.

Participants simply report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter.

To encourage participation, participants receive full access to all results, not just those for the A3, for free.

We recently updated survey results for the A3 to include owner experiences through December 31, 2009. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2009: 32, better than average, but very small sample size

2008: 42, about average, small sample size

2007: 49, about average

2006: 93, about average but very close to "worse than average" (thank the clips for the sunroof shade)

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds," to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop.

In the case of the A3, the percentage with no repairs is about 31 for the 2006 and 64 for the 2007, while the percentage of lemons is about 4 for the 2006 and less than one for the 2007.

We'll have further updates in May and August. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

We've updated survey results for the A3 to include owner experiences through March 31, 2010. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2009: 25, better than average, but small sample size

2008: 38, better than average, sample size a single car short of the minimum for a full result

2007: 52, about average

2006: 73, about average (will improve as the clips for the sunroof shade fall outside the one-year window)

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds," to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop.

In the case of the A3, the percentage with no repairs is about 44 for the 2006 and 58 for the 2007, while the percentage of lemons is about 3 for the 2006 and less than one for the 2007.

Thank you to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in August and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

In a couple of weeks we'll start previewing the next set of results to participants. The preview results will be updated as responses come in.

How many model years will we be able to fully cover this time around? It depends entirely on the number of owners that participate.

Updated reliability stats next month.

As always, the more owners participate, the better the information we can provide to everyone.
