Cell Phone Prep
I have just taken delivery of a Phantom Black Sportback 2.0T DSG. Fantastic! I have also upgraded to an I-mate K-jam cell phone/PDA. My car has cell phone prep and works great with Bluetooth, but I would like to mount my phone on the bracket supplied. Has anyone any idea where and when a cradle for this phone will be available?
All the i-mate stuff is made by HTC, so you'll see the k-jam is comes in several brand variations (QTEK 9100, XDA Mini S, MDA Compact), so anything which is advertised as compatible with these devices will also fit your k-jam as all have the same dimensions. Hope that's of some potential help!!!
Hi,
I'm new to the Forum...! Nice to meet you all.
Just taken delivery of my new A3 S'back 2.0T Special Edition S-Line in Brilliant Black... Absolutely love it! Traded in a Jaguar X Type Sport 2.0 so its nice to feel a bit of power again!
I too have the full Bluetooth kit and Voice Recognition, but neither Audi or I can get the SIM card details from my Orange SPV M500 (same as MDA Compact, Ijam, etc) to transfer onto the phone, so therefore i'm not getting Caller ID on the car display... Also i cant find a cradle unit to fit my M500 onto the Audi fitted dash mount... CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP? Otherwise i'll have to buy another phone!
Its a shame, as my M500 runs TomTom Mobile for full SatNav, and I have that running via a bluetooth GPS receiver only the size of a small matchbox... WOuld be great to have the satnav on the phone and on the mount...! Erm...!
Any advice is really appreciated.
Cheers
Ed

Edwos, I'm confused!! So you need to get contacts from your phone address book on to the SIM card itself so your audi kit will work? Is this like the Porsche SIM system where you simply slot the SIM card in to the dash and away you go - if so I can see why you need to info on the SIM?? If not, I don't see why you need to get the info off the MDA to use all the features of the car kit. I can certainly get you some answers as I work as a mobile data comms engineer (BlackBerry and the like) and serveral companies we work with do bespoke car fittings for the devices we sell. Can you get me more info on the car kit in question.
Hi Macmonkey,
Thanks for your reply, I really appreciate it...!
I have the standard factory fit B'Tooth kit with voice recognition on the Sportback... Audi tell me that the names and numbers saved on the SIM card on my M500 phone (same as MDA, etc) should auto copy onto the cars' memory system 'in the background' every time i get in the car, so that i can use the multi function steering wheel to flick thru my addressbook on the dash display, and then make/receive calls using Caller ID, etc.
But my phone wont work!
I can get hands free, and the Display on the car shows me that i have an incoming call, but it doesnt show the name/number of the caller. That is to say that the data on my phone SIM card isnt linking to the car like it should... Audi simply say that i need to replace my smartphone with a more 'basic' phone...
Also, the cars phone system link with my M500 just switches itself on and off when it pleases, without me even touching the mobile... As if the BT signal is 'lost' then refound.. Weird...?
Do you have some ideas?
Cheers

I've got a couple of theories. Older SIM cards have different voltages with different storage capacities, perhaps your kit won't work with an older SIM. Also, I'm wondering about Bluetooth compliance. There is Bluetooth versions 1 and 2. I've seen cases where a lot of factory fitted kits are version 1 compliant, and have compatibility issues with version 2 devices (and vice versa). This normally causes issues with dropping connections as you have experienced.
This is always painful and car maufacturers never have a clue what devices their kits work with. So many car manufacturers are guilty of this and need to pull their socks up with it, especially in the UK where it's illegal to talk on a phone while driving unless the phone is on a kit or handfree unit and the phone is in a fixed position in the vehicle.

Got some more info for you. I'm a member of blackberryforums.com and I came across a guy who posted the following which I think is relevent:
"I just wanted to post a piece of general information from my personal experiences with Bluetooth in the new S4 since it seems like there is little information out there. I purchased the Sirius/Bluetooth pack with my 2006 model and do not have a car cradle (they don't make one for Blackberrys anyways) or nav system, but use a Blackberry 7100g.
I initially had firmware verson 4.0.2.49 on the phone which allowed me to seamlessly use the Bluetooth interface to initiate and end calls, and to use the dial-by-voice directory using entries that I manually recorded. That was all nice, and surprisingly the sound quality using the Audi Bluetooth was better then my Blackberry itself, so I have been very happy with the performance. I noticed that the Audi manual describes the ability to download your cell phone address book into the system, but that capability was not available with my 7100g.
Recently, I upgrade to the 4.1.0.256 firmware version for the 7100g available from Hong Kong CSL Limited. The 4.1.X version has increased Bluetooth capabilities. Everything appears to work fine (it is all in English) and now I am able to sync the cell phone address book with my car's BT address book. This has allowed me to now use the instrument cluster display to show address book entries and initiate a phone call without touching my cell phone. It really is nifty and very easy to use."
Edwos, this is quite interesting as (although this guy uses a BlackBerry), I think this points to what I was saying about compatible Bluetooth revisions. The kit appears to be Bluetooth version 2 compliant, but I have a feeling your i-mate may not be. There's a possibility that you may be able to perform a ROM update on your i-mate device although I'm unsure of whether any of the current ROM updates cover any enhancements to Bluetooth - you'll need to check this with your carrier. If you have a standard i-mate then their ROM updates will be compatible with your device, whereas if you have a network branded version (Orange SPV, T Mobile MDA) then you'll need to see if the mobile carrier have any ROM updates for it as the standard non network versions are unlikely to be compatible due to software revisions.

Hi.
I did the downlaod and a full factory reset... No change! The ORANGE website tells me that the ROM update i've taken does increase bluetooth performance, but sadly the info still isnt copying from the SIM card on the phone to the sportback's in built system. Maybe I should get a blackberry!?
I guess i need to change my phone!
Do you know what options i've got for a phone that definitely will work, other than a blackberry? I dont want to buy another phone and fall into the same trap with the same problems!
Are there any smartphones I can use? Want to put my Tom Tom on there aswell!
Also, what phones are compatible with the in built factory fitted Cell Phone Prep'd power supply/cradle...?
Cheers
