Custom Installed Radar Detectors...

http://www.escortradar.com/custom-installed.htm

I have been able to find pictures of installs on forums... but no one explaining how difficult it is.

Do I really need to have this professionally done?

The real reason I want one of these instead of a windshield mounted model (there is no reason to debate here valentine or escort etc) is that I live in NYC and consistently park my car on the street... I am worried someone will break in just to steal the radar and although it is a simple procedure to take it off the dash every time I park it gets to be a pain and I know the 1 time I forget... is the time I will wind up replacing the window.

Adversely does anyone know to conceal the windshield detectors without sacrificing the functionability?

Thanks!!!!

I have a K40 (professionally installed) for the very same reason. My main unit is mounted up under the front bumper. I have my city/highway/volume switch mounted in the cubby hole under the stereo. The speaker is in the upper left hand corner of the windshield (tint strip hides the speaker). It is very much a stealth install. I don't have any pictures, I will try to take some sometime over the next couple of days

what iu did (wish i had a pic) was mesh a regular plug-in detector into where my door pillar is (a pillar) and made a housing around it....so it looked hidden and put a clock or a gauge over it so it looked like notheing but a gauge was there....when i customize things i want to make it as subtle as possible;)especially since a cop would see the detector and give ya a hrd tome abt it its smart to hide it

sounds like that was the balls out bad boy bluetooth K40. I got a hookup and mine was nowhere near that price. Mine is not the bluetooth version, and was (well) under $1k.

That being said, if I had an AM, I think my lead foot would eventually cost me more than $4k.

Is there any way for you to get a pic? Even if its just camera-phone quality??

This sounds very interesting... but I need to see it.

By placing it in a cylinder does it detract from the performance at all??

If you decide to install yourself, the hardest part is going to be mounting the laser detectors/shifters, if you get a unit with laser capabilities. They usually come with two front sensors that you are supposed to mount as close to the headlights as possible. Probably the best place on the A3 would be in the vents under the headlights / next to the fog lights (if equipped). You will also have a rear laser sensor, usually set up so it will mount to the screws on your license plate. You will have to find (or make) a hole for the wire to get inside the car. You can mount the radar sensor anywhere behind the grill, no prob. If you can install a car stereo, you can probably handle this and save yourself a pile of cash by not paying for installation.

Eventually, I'd like to do one of these in my A3. I'd love to see some pics too, if possible.

I put a Beltronics LR Remote in my A3. It is a very good detector, much better than the Whistler remote I have in my Miata. I really like it and have had it in my last 3 cars. It has the radar receiver in the lower grill, front lasar behind the rearview mirror and rear lasar sitting beside the parcel shelf in back. Some pictures are below.

Nice install! Got any pics of the rear laser? Does it interfere with the cargo shelf when you raise the hatch?
