Dealer using wrong oil?
Just had my 5000 mile service at my dealer outside of Atlanta and they put Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 in my car. As far as I can tell, that oil is not VW 502 approved. "Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra" is the only approved Pennzoil 5W30 on the list, and I would bet that is not the same as the Pennzoil Platinum that is widely available in the US.
The invoice states that they used part # ZVP-000-540 CASTSYS5W4, which I'm guessing is the Audi part # for the VW approved Castrol.
I'm ready to call the service director to complain. I'm guessing he will say that Pennzoil is on the list of approved oils, ignoring the fact that only the "European Formula Ultra" is on the list, and that is not what they use.
Would I be wrong to make a big deal out of this?

Because 1) both the service advisor and parts manager told me that's what they use, and 2) there were Pennzoil Platinum posters and literature all over the service area.
Good point, though. I suppose there is a chance that they didput the approved Castrol in my car. I should call the service director to clarify. However, I don't want to call until I know for certainwhether Pennzoil Platinum (US formula like you can buy at WalMart) is VW 502 certified.

I believe that the dealer is compelled to use VW502 oil. This lists the currentoil approved by VW. Using anything different would caouse them to be liable.

My dealer in Las Vegas used 0W40 for my 5000 oil change. Then my 10K was in Montana and they put in 5W40. Had to find out why. I guess if you live in a state that stays over the 100 degree marker for more then over half the year the lighter wieght doesn't burn down as fast. Oh and I did get off the phone with them and they said all dealers are told to use the Castrol in all the new 2.0t engines and of '08 be used in every engine. My dealer said they are very pushy about this and have been known to take dealerships away for not following there directions.
IMO. If you are not happy with the feel of the oil in your car you could recoup $33.00 dollars from penzoil usa they've had this promo running since 2006.
If i'm not mistaken that platinum oil is penzoils synthetic version correct?
If it is i dont think you'll have much to worry about, most of the new synthetic oils on the market meet or exceed the sae label .
I know we all want to protect our expensive engines, but i dont think anyone on this forum can say that your turbo or engine will go bad quickerif you use penzoil synthetic vs amsoil or whatever other namebrand.
Now if you track your car every week i can say do your research on the nitty gritty of each different oil company's ingredients, or additives.
good luck

I hear you concer and I would be aswell, but you did everything to the book. If something hapens to your motor, that garage will need to sort it out. In that event I would give them **** and expect a new motor and not a repaired one!!!!

If the oil is synthetic, you dont have anything to worry about.
All I know is that Peneske uses Mobil 1 (Which I prefer anyways).
Different dealerships do use different oils as long as they meet or exceed specifications.
I really wouldnt worry about it.
