i got a citation for the front lic plate also, but cops only give those fix-it tickets out when you're caught for another ticket, it's just a waste of their time just to stop you for a lic plate problem. i've driven by many cops without my front lic plate and haven't been stopped since.......knock on wood. oh, and btw, when i stopped a woman cop so she can write off my fix it ticket, i gave her my ticket, showed up the front lic plate, then she called for back up and 4 other cop cars showed up. WTF!!!!! back up came and she signed off my ticket......... i don't get it

you can always go to the audi dealer and just unbolt the lic plate frame and holder from one of theaudis in the lotand put it on yours........

Nam,

Cops most likely won't pull you over for just a front license plate, but they might. Definitely, they will pull you over at LAX. That's what happened to me. Now that I work three blocks from the airport, I will no longer have my Euro plates on the front.[]

Hey fellas,
Thanks for the input. I went to Audi and bought the new front. Bit pricey, but will be cheaper in the long run if it means getting less tickets. So now that i have my new one, the old one is up for grabs if anyone wants it. I can upload a photo of it if needed.

Cheers for the help.

I agree w/ Chef, LAX cops have some mandate to ticket cars w/o front license plates, some sort of useless homeland security thing. I got dinged there around New Year's, but got a 2 monthextension online, so I have to get mine signed off before tax day.

As for police calling for backup with regard to Nam, that's because you're suspicious looking! Just kidding, just go to a proper CHP office next time. It's safer than just rolling up on some cop on the street. The CHPdon't charge for signing off on fix-it tickets, unlike regular city police or sheriff.

Re: front plate vs. front plate filler... do you guys think the extra surface area make a difference in terms of blocking off a bit of the intercooler? At least that's my excuse.

I have driven a '64 Benz SL in the Bay Area without a front plate since 1989 without any form of incident.
At Christmas, I added a German plate with the exact numbers as my CA registration (solely because I like the look). A friend in law enforcement agreed that an officer would have to be a real SOB to cite a plate that gives correct identification, and actually gave it as a gift.

Plan to switch filler panels and do the same with my Audi. Wish me luck.

I would think if the license plate is not a official California plate then a police office would be inclined to cite you. If you could put any form or size plate on a California car, don't you think a thriving cottage industry would be in California making these plates! [8D]

John is correct.Up to this point, my reseach into the Ca DMV code revealed only that "a" front plate must be correctly mounted, if the vehicle can accomodate a front plate.
Deeper research has confrmed that the plate must be the std 6x12 and that it must be the "issued" plate. Oh, well.

u couldve just put the lisence plate in the windshield on the inside.. as long as the plate is present somewhere in the front it doesnt matter... they just have to be able to see the numbers in the front.. it doesnt matter where..soo jus put it in the windshield
