+1 on not doing it yourself. Unless you do it every day, it is going to take you way too long to do it, and it won't look as good as a professional install anyway.

After you get tinted, don't roll down your windows for 48-72 hours. I wasn't thinking and went to a drivethrough at a fast food place the same night I got mine tinted. I looked like a dork because I had to pull up far away from the window and open up my door.

I did the 3M tint - it's called Crystalline, comes in 70% and 50%. It generally has ahint of blue-ish color to it, and blocks heat and IR better than Huper, and at least as well as dark conventional tints. I did myentire windshield, sides and back in 70%, used the 50 on the Open Sky panels.
I'm very pleased with this stuff, and I've had many different tints over the years. The windshield tint is virtually undetectable, though it does reduce glare day and night. Summer heat reduction is great, but night vision is unimpaired (important for old guys). The side and back windows look lightly tinted, due to the light tint they alreadyhad from the factory. Overall, the 3M is great stuff.
The bad news - $800 for the tint job.

I've got a little bit of tinting experience, but I've never tinted a whole car before. I did a window for a friend whose car was broken into, but it wasn't too hard because we tinted the glass to match the others before installing it into the car. I've done plenty of house windows too, but of course it is much easier to work with a perfect square/rectangle than the curved windows on a car. It's like anything else though, there's only one way to learn.

hesaputz- thanks for the input on the 3M Crystalline, it sounds like good stuff. The price doesn't make me too happy though! [sm=jawdrop.gif]

Tinting places in Northern California aren't cheap. It took $235 after a discount coupon I found at a local import tuner garage in SF to tint my 325i. I'm looking at tinting the A3 and probably looking at the same pricing. Where do you get yours for less than $200 in the Bay Area?

Anyone?

How much of that cost would you say was associated with the windshield and OS panels? I am thinking about getting my windshield done before next summer. I just can't have anything that affect my night vision (it's bad enough already).

I can call the shop ( Auto Distinctions, 918 665 2886) here in Tulsa to get prices, but I'd guess that half the price was windshield and OS. They'renormally the most difficult parts of the job, but the installer said that the A3 was easy - came out perfect.
I have no trouble with the windshield tint at night - it's just barely there, and reallydoesn't darken at all.I was very concerned about this, too - I'm 56 and my night vision is somewhat diminished. this stuff works great.

I will see if my tint guy has ever used that product since I usually get a really good hookup. I take it LEOs never give you any hassle about the windshield?

No hassles so far - really looks like a slightly colored factory glass. The A3 windshield has the black shading sandwiched between the glass layers, rather than on the inside like most glass. As a result, the tint lays smoothly on the inside of the windshield, rather than bumping up slighly over the black pebbly shading. There's no detectable edge or border -requires a very detailed and minute exam to tell there's tint.
If you ever get up here, stop by and check it out. I feel like I got my money's worth. My daughter's car has conventional tint with a windshield strip - it really bothers me to have that strip now that i've been spoiled by this setup.

I have a windshield strip on mine already, but that is to hide the speaker for my radar detector. Not sure when I am going to be heading up your way, but I will let you know before hand when I do. I want to check out the rest of the mods you have done too!
