Has anybody tried to put a 9' or so surfboard inside their car?
In my Legacy, with the seats down it's no problem, another 6-12"
under the dash left. But I do realize that the A3 is a more compact
vehicle.

off the top of my head, i dont think it will fit. the overall exterior length is 168.5" [just at 14']. The board itself is 108", as im sure you are aware. I did however see a posting on autotrader with a guy who had his matching longboard mounted on top. I believe it was a removable ski rack.

 

My 9'11" def will not fit. Haven't tried my 9'6" yet as I don't surf it anymore. I would highly suggest a rack for the purpose of keeping your interior nice and clean alone. no wax/sand/salt water on your seats.

 

I hope to avoid roof racks. It rains here quite often,
mostly brief showers, but enough to give the car
a salty bath. Plus I do not care for the looks.
I have a board-bag, so sand/wax/water inside of
the casis not an issue.
I also have a 7'11" board, which,
quite frankly, is a bit on the short side for me.
But I could probably work up my skills back
to that level if I had to. Come to think of it,
another reason to buy the A3 - my surfing will
get better! :-)

I have Thule racks which I only put on when I go surfing. Takes 7 minutes to put on and take off. I don't like the look either, but its fine for when Im actually going surfing. But you living in Hawaii I'm sure you go more often than I and it would be quite a pain to keep taking them on and off. Where do you surf in Hawaii? We just finished filming a movie there. I wasn't there on location, but our production was. Hawaii is one of my next surf destinations! Can't wait.

 

I doubt a 9' board will fit inside, but an 8'6" or so should, barely. I have a 6'6" that fits easily and I have an 8ft long Remote Control model airplane that I can squeeze in with the wings and tail off.

It definitely is amazing how much you can fit it this car, and yet it is significantly shorter overall than my '03 A4....

 

On Oahu I surf mainly Waikiki, especially Publics. Occasionally the Diamond Head. On Maui Kanaha and the West Side. The Oahu surf seems to be better, more consistent, a bit bigger on a given day.

Will keep the forum posted as to whether the 9' fits or not, should I get into that stage.
Will go see the dealer today to get a feel about the place. It is the only dealer on the island.

 

Agree-it's awesome how much can fit inside.

My 6'7" with boardbag fits with the passenger seat slid forward, but I haven't trieda longboard yet. Would too much of it stick out if you rolled down the window? []

Went to see the dealer today.
The sales rep claimed he fit a 9'6" inside an A3 with the
nose on the dash, did not specify if in a bag (I forgot to ask).
He seemed pretty credible, but
will check before actual purchase if necessary.
