Looking to buy.
Hello there, im currently looking at changing my car to an Audi a3, Pre hatchback shape..
Ive been looking mainly at the 1998-2001 models, specifically the 1.6, 1.8t and 1.8 non turbo.
I know poeple will say if they have service history they can run endlessly etc.
but like most engines they have an average last time, any idea what that might typically be on the a3?
Are they really as economical as people say for motorway and urban driving?
Do you think its a nice car to buy and drive etc?
Thanks.

Don't know what the "Pre-hatchback shape" is, and in the US, we've only had A3's since late 2005.
From my experience with a 2006 2.0T hatchback, yes, they are very nice to drive, quite practical and economical. I was surprised that insurance was very reasonable - very little increase over my 1993 BMW 325i.
The 2.0T has a reputation for oil consumption (steady 1500-2000 mi/qt for me), but seems to be OK for reliability. I've heard that earlier Audis tend to have small electrical problems.
