Default loss of power to rear wheels, 4wd failure.

hello all,
can i begin by saying that i know NOTHING AT ALL about cars or how to fix them, so any advice needs to be lowest common denominator. thanks.
got an issue with my W reg 2000 1.8T quattro.
took her to the garage the other day for a small part and while she was there the chaps in garage thought the car wasn't working properly.
well after a little fiddle they decided that the 4wd system wasn't working and that no drive was going to the back wheels. Now i didnt really want to pay them £50 an hour to carry on fiddiling as they admitted this wasnt an area of expertise.they seemed to think there is an issue with the rear diff and this was causing the 4wd to stop working. Local audi garage quoted me 3k for a new diff, more than the car is worth.
has anyone come across such an issue before? how on god's earth am i going to sort this? it's all greek to me.
thanks for your time.

You have to take it to someone who knows the stuff. There could be a whole host of reasons for the rear wheel to be not being powered. From clutch pump, pressure sensor, temp sensor, ABS sensor to accelerometer sensor.

They have to tap into your CAN bus to get any error that is reported. Some people even said some error could only be retrieved from the Haldex unit.
