HI there, new member with a 2006 a3 that I just bought, loving it.

Just did a quick search on this website, got the DIY from phatnoise website.

Anyone with a a3 with the phatbox installed can provide me with any usefull info? can it be fitted somewhere else than in the trunk? where you bought yours and how much it cost?

I installed the phatbox in my '07 A3. I got it from someone on the audi forums. Make sure you have the audi-specific cable. Mine came with the vw one and I had to get the audi on from ebay.

I think I got it around $500. And yes, I installed it in the trunk, actually below it by the spare tire. You might be able to fit it under the driver's seat if you dont have bluetooth.

Also, make sure you have the "keys" for pulling the stero headunit out. Having the pin removal tools would be helpful too.

 

Please pardon my ignorance, but what is Phatbox? Is that some kind of VW thing?

Think cd changer, but with a hard drive instead. I have the 20gb option.
The cool part is that it integrates with the steering wheel controls.
Audi used to offer this as an accessory. You can still get them off ebay.

 

Does it work a lot better than most of the iPod solutions available? Who has it (has had it in the past)? Thoughts?

I dont have bluetooth so it's a really good idea to try to fit it under the seat. I think I have the listing of all the parts I need, just try to get it online here to Canada without paying a fortune...

Any other help would be appreciated, specially about place to buy it exept ebay.

I have it installed in the glovebox in a 2006 A3. Quick and easy install; VW cable is already there in 2006 models. If you choose to install it in the glovebox, buy a VW phatbox instead of an audi phatbox.

Yeah, I have an '07 A3, so I dont have the cd changer cable in the glovebox.
But I assume you have to cut the sides off the phatbox to fit it?

Oh, and I paid $120, not $500.

 

what is the wiring solution for an 07 with the bose in-dash changer?
