RE: our new rival?
I dont think it is that ugly.I would have to agree with MB at 100 more horse power it is no rival.A step up in performance but a couple steps down in style. I looked a both and considered waiting for the new WRX STI to come out and I am glad I made the decision I did.

I saw the STI at the LA Auto show a couple weeks ago. It's ugly but it sorta grows on you, like an orphaned dog. It looks pretty mean in the dark grey.
There might be buyers considering the STI and the A3 and saying "do I want performance or luxury?" I think the A3 is the right balance of performance, luxury and practicality.
The real down side to the STI is, every time someone in a Evo, Si or any other tuner sees you, they'll try to race you. Have fun with that while you're out going to the store or taking the kids to school.

RE: our new rival?
We have a great car, with a lengthy dominating history behind the name considering the quattro in past rally sport competition, and in f1 cars, but lets not forget we have the entry level boasting 200 stock horses and frt wheel drive.
Alot of our competitors have280-300 hp stock awd and some rear wheel drive.
That wrx sti is a great car imo looks might not be up to mine or your std, but that thing wouldput a serious whoopin on us .
Rival i think not, a class above us in performance yes. Just my honest opinion.

Warren Brown - from the Washington Post did an interesting review on the WRX: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...120601964.html
I looked at the WRX when I ended up with my A3. Yes, BAMF's correct - the price difference back then would have been made up by the insurance premuim in 2 years. Also, if I was driving purely on open roads with no traffice - it would have been great. But, because of our famous beltway traffic - I had to consider other factors apart from just speed or performance.
I definitely did not want to spend that kind of money on a car and be sitting in traffic staring at an interior that I thought did not hit for par. Maybe it's just me - but, there was no way that interior was worth that money as for the A3's interior - I have been totally happy with it since day one.
Overall - Competition yes. Rival - No. The fact that Subaru is changing their demographics focus says that they are following.
