I bought a base model (Open Sky was the ONLY option) and I don't regret it at all!!! I can calculate my own MPG. I know when my tank is about empty by looking at the fuel guage. I still have power windows/locks. I didn't WANT leather because a 100lb dog is sometimes a passenger in the car. I still get a temp display and a clock.....Sure there were some things that would have been nice to have (fogs, HID's), but I would have had to get packages full of stuff that I didn't want just to get the few things that I did. Not worth it to me.And when I change out the stereo head unit, I don't have to worry about losing steering wheel control functionality. When I started looking at Audi's, I was actually looking at $40k A4 avants, and just ended up liking this base model A3 sooooo much more. As far as I am concerned....I have no regrets at all.
X2!

Wanted fogs, but like E said, I did not what the other options that came with it. Did not want leather, did not want chrome all over the interior, did not want Bose, and sorta wanted sport suspension, but I served my time in the Army in Germany, had a blast blazing down the autobahn in my GTI.

No sense beating yourself up over not getting the Premium! Live and learn, the A3 was a big step up for me, I have always added addtional options that I did not have on previous cars, Live and learn!

no worries mate. you still got an audi. not some cheap vw golf or mazda 3 or whatever.

enjoy your baby as is. it is still an A3, a2.0 Turbo, which at least to me, it still scares me a bit when i put my foot down on the freeway. it's a hell of an engine.

sure, there are some bells and whistles you could have gotten, but don't live regretting it, enjoy your car. perhaps in 2-3 years you can trade it in for an s3 or a TDI.

Yea, this was a huge leap for me. My first new car, and only my third overall. Before this was an '89 dodge dakota 5 speed manual, top speed of 85mph!! and then a '96 achieva which did have a v6 and some power, but was automatic. It was only a matter of weeks between my first thoughts of getting a new car and taking home an A3. Definitely more patience next time. Though I suppose I didn't do too bad, this car is amazing and I dont plan on getting rid of it any time soon.

Hi L7, there was a recent test with a VW GTI (cousin of A3) with what would happen with 0-60 MPH benchmarks with four passengers and the results were negligible. If you had the weight of quattro, that would effect your performance by maybe .1 or .2 secs. I have the premium package and notice no problem with acceleration or fuel economy (I gotten 33-34 MPG at constant 70 mph). The drivers seat isn't that heavy.

Hey JohnS;
I was trying to help the man out okay. I was reaching there. I could not think of any reason why one should not have gotten the premium package if they wanted it.
Thanks for the info though - I was always wondering about performance drop off while fully loaded.

Take the $1650 and invest it wisely in the following:

1) AWE Resonated Catback exhaust $598
2) K&N Air Filter $42
3) Koni / H&R / Eibach Sport suspension $600-800, depending.

Use the balance for someshoptime from a friendly nearby shop to install.

Get Jonny Lang's CD "Lie to Me", and find your favorite road. Cue music.

"Lie to me, and tell me everything is all right..." [sm=smiley20.gif]

Until you have upgraded the suspension, and gone to 245/40-17s or 235/40-18sand Bridgestone RE-01Rs or Goodyear F1 GS-D3 and maybe even put a limited slip in (~$2500 installed) don't even think about chipping, because you have no way of putting the extra power on the ground.

This packagewill get you a much more sporting drving experience, a ~1.5" lowering and some beautiful music from both the exhaust and the stereo.

I must strongly disagree with you here. Chipping is by FAR the best bang for your buck, and even with stock suspension setup and tires(yes, the craptacular p6's) It gets more then enough power to the ground to be tons of fun. Just gotta be a bit light on the throttle in 1st gear, after that, just hold on and all the power gets turned into forward motion, well at least 95% or so.

I agree. There is no reason at all why remapping shouldn't be your first mod.

Definitely remap the car first. The power is fully useable except for the last 5% in first gear. If you get a better set of sticky tires then you get even better control over the extra power. I have a well modified car and get almost full usage of my power without the LSD, although I'd really like to have one.

Cheers!

I had the same feeling. When I was at the dealership I went with the cheaper option and now, I wished I had not so I have spent the last couple of weeks to rationalize things... It helps to read this thread because as they said ^^^^ things can be improved...
I got the Premium package and to be honest, it does not make the car better, I do wish I got the S package though...
Live and learn I guess, this is my 5th car and I am still an idiot at it.
Cheers.

Olivier... browse the forums at www.vwvortex.com - you may see people with A3 (S-Line or Sport Package) selling their sport suspension. Or just upgrade your suspension, that is the main difference between the two packages.
