Rear Differential Problem

Rear Differential Problem
I have a 2006 A3 2.0 FSi S-Line(bought 2 years ago). It has done just 54000 and is not driven hard as we have 2 infant children.
Whilst parked another vehicle hit the front passenger side wheel with some force, snapping the wheel arm. It was sent to repairs through insurance.
The 1st time it was driven it broke down so I had it towed to an Audi garage to get diagnostics. An engine coil needed replacing, the steering angle sensor was faulty and a problem with the rear differential was causing damage to the clutch (burning smell).
I referred it back to the insurance co who are now saying that none of the above diagnostics are accident related.
I have argued that the steering angle sensor must be related as the steering was damaged, but as I have little knowledge about cars I can't argue with them about the differential.
Audi have quoted me £3350 to replace it and say the clutch may also need replacing as has been damaged by the differntial problem.
I have read that you hear a loud grinding noise on turning when there is a rear diff prob, but I never heard this noise prior to the accident.
Is it possible that the impact could have dislodged/damaged the rear diff?
If not, why would there be a prob with a 4yr old, low mileage car which I have had serviced by Audi at the correct times?
I would be really grateful if someone out there with a lot more car knowlege than me could help?
Many thanks
Nicki
