Default Unable to read ECU

Before I take my 2007 2.0T in for it's 15,000 mile service (my first time as I bought it used) I thought I would go thru the inspection as outlined in the handbook. I plugged my OBD2 reader in and could not read the ECU. I plugged it into my Chevy truck and it reads fine. My car is equipped with a GIAC chip so I tried it's module and got the same result ie not able to connect. The car is running fine so I'm sure it's something with the plug wiring, but I don't really know. Any ideas?

Is your OBD2 reader CAN bus compatible?

I don't think so, but then should not have the GIAC reader been able to read the ECU? My appointment is tomorrow so will see what they say.

Dealer flashed the ECU per a recall notice. Didn't say anything, I'll check it out again this weekend.
