hey man, i already asked the question which is better and i got a consensis that if your looking to upgrade or tune in any way, the 1.8 is a better choice (its more expensive cause its more desirable to tune with). the quattro is all wheel drive, non-disableable. without it though, you lose alot of the grip and performance that audi is known for, even if you dont live near snow, it still a good idea for the control and kind of allows to "throw" the car in and out of turns a little harder. its front wheel drive and id suggest a 5spd not the tiptronic. i just got my 1.8 and i love it, the turbo is a LOT of fun. it was a close call between the two though, i'd say if youre not looking to upgrade, the 2.8 is a good investment.
well the car is audi. i would imgine a 150,000 mile plus car unmodified, but if your planing to modify slightly, id say the milage would drop pretty fast....somehwere aroud 130,000(ballpark).i think the 2.8 is a good way to go, ecu and exhast upgrades will run about 1500$ total so its not bad. also with a supercharger (4000$), the 2.8 is in the 300 hp range. the car is VERY reliable unmodified. the ONLY turbo problem ive ever seenis an inability to shift fast enough to keep up with it. it is also reliable.
Could I suggest that if you want the car to go faster then you leave the car un-modified. Why not decide what power and performance you want and then pick the car that best suits. If you want to retain Audi reliability then you should really be leaving the car std. Any upgrade should also be followed with brake, lubrication, lighting etc etc upgrades as well. Remeber that the Pistons, Con-Rods and crankshaft have all been designed to run reliably in that car under a given power output. You increase the power and torque and then reliability drops off. That is my personal feeling only...I appreciate that others may not agree.

Prior to getting the S4, I had a BMW M3 Evo (with 103k on clock) and I covered around 30k miles in it. At the time I lived in the south of france and travelled to work most days doing around 130mph...the car worked hard for a living..! Anyway, in that time I had no major issues or problems. I changed the oil every 4k miles and the car had no mods at all. However, I read on other BMW sites that guys with half the mileage mine had are having problems left, right and centre. There is one common factor, they were all modififed or molested,either chipped or something else......it may just be coincidence but......

Decide what performance you want and get car leaving it std. Buy the time you have bought a decent 1.8t and tuned it to drive like a 2.7, you will have spent enough to have bought the2.7 in the first place, but without the relability issues. Just some food for thought...

1.8t = 150bhp, FWD

1.8t sport = 190bhp 4wd

2.8 =197bhp (192?) 4wd

2.7 = 265bhp 4wd, newer versions have higher output

1.8Ts are cheaper, I just bought one, since the 2.8 is a more expensive option, they cost more. The tuner factor that you're talking about really doesnt exist because 1.8Ts are not scarce at all, so the supply easily meets the demand. And there aren't really a whole lot of people modding 1.8Ts besdies the concentration you find on the forums. Prob 1/15 A4s I see have any mods. But I live in MA, not SoCal.
