there are some big differences between the 2.8 and the 1.8t, notably the "t" which is a turbo. The 2.8 is a naturally aspirated v6, while the 1.8t 4cyl relies on its turbo to get much of its power.

If you plan to mod the car, I'd suggest a 1.8t since there are way more aftermarket modding options available. Modding a 2.8 is much more expensive to get any worthwhile upgraded performance.

With a 1.8 you can get nearly 50 hp just with a $400 chip. The 2.8 chip gives about 15 hp. Take the extra money you have in your budget and mod the 1.8t with a chip, exhaust, and suspension.

I own a 98.5 1.8t quattro and I am glad I bought the turbo version. I would buy another 1.8 before a 2.8.

ah that sucks... just the mention of turbo can make some insurance companies shiver

There are some differences in trim (2.8 has wood trim while 1.8 has aluminum style), but the interior is almost the same. My friends 2.8 is the same year as mine and is nearly indentical to mine inside.... However the 2.8 comes with leather seats while the 1.8t has "leatherette" - its high quality vinyl that is actually quite nice.

Interior dimensions are the same, fuel economy is slightly better in the 1.8. I believe the 2.8 comes with 16" wheels stock as opposed to the 15" for the 1.8 (non sport version). Power seats are standard on the 2.8 also.

The 2.8 is a very nice car. You won't be disappointed if you buy one. Another note on modding... you could always upgrade a 2.8 with a supercharger system (ie. PES t28) that would pop you up to about 280 hp. Goes for about $3000 US.

the 2.8 is more a cruiseverhicle... you'd have a smooth, nice sounding V6

If you really want more than 193 bhp than you should go for a 1.8t( easy tuning) ... for me it wouldn't be neccesairy...
