Default A4 whining noise when starting

I don't know of anthing to do with the emissions that would cause a whining noise

Vacuum leak? I just cleared a guys codes today with my VAGcom cuz the hose to his BPV was leaking badly. It threw a check engine light. Check all your hoses for leaks and damage.

Could be that is bad when its cold and ok when it warms up - could be belts - they do have a tendency to sound likea bad bearing when they are bad.

Might be the MAF? Mass Air Flow sensor? Sometimes that get bad/dirty and the ECU can;t computer correct fuel to air mix ratios.... that could throw a CEL too.

edit - sorry just saw that your is a 2.8. I dunno if your even has a BPV or a MAF. Might be turbo cars only.
