There are many changes for the 1.8t over the years - most of em during the half year in 1999 (I am bored to I will explain em), not much to the motor itself beyond the 20 hp and added torque specs (plus the red T). 2001's are basically the same as 2000's, with exception to the badge and ESP.

99.5 -- Sidemarkers changed from small to elongated, headlights went to 1 piecefromthe previous 2 piece. Badge location changed (99's had it on the top of the decklid, 99.5 has it lower on the backpanel). Passenger side mirror went full size. Rear taillights changed slightly. Door handles changed also.

2000 -- Xenon lights became available. Interior changed. Sport wheels changed...

Lots of other non-noticable things (t-belt tensioner was updated, control arms have been redesigned, K03 turbo went through a slight upgraded design, now I am rambling because I do not want to do any work...)

Boredom is always helped by a chip upgrade.

ESP is Audi's Electronic Stability Program, an option on 2001+. It basically uses the brakes, the ABS system, and a number of additional sensors to maintain vehicle directional control, particularly while changing direction, swerving, or cornering.

ESP is NOT a substitute for Quattro. Quattro is NOT a substitute for ESP. Quattro, ABS, and ESP are in many ways complimentary. Quattro optimizes propulsive traction and in the process enhances lateral traction. ABS optimizes braking traction and in the process enhances lateral traction while braking. ESP seeks to directly maintain and control lateral traction and directional/cornering stability in situations where it might otherwise be compromised.

That said - many people turn it off unless its raining or snowing. They have found that it tries to make corrections when there are none needed (or at least none perceived by the driver to be needed). You would have a button on your dash if you have ESP.

You can tell if you have Xenons. You would know if you had em. The stock xenons look fairly blue. There are upgrade kits, but I have not looked into them. An upgrade is fairly expensive, I do know that.

cheers
