Default Timing Belt

Im assuming your asking why they always tell you too change the water pump with the timing belt. Its because it takes so much work to get to the front of the engine it would be silly not too replace a wear prone item, which is relitively cheap compared till waiting till it breaks. You dont have too replace it but if it breaks youll be kickin yourself in the ***.

Default Timing Belt

yeah, most of the cost of a timing belt/tensioner change is the labor of taking the front end of the car off. You have to do the same to change the water pump, so just as well to do that at the same time and save on labor costs.

You can actually do the thermostat without putting the car in the service position, but its a tough job with very little breathing room. But the pump impeller is behind the belt system...

IMPORTANT!! on the 1.8T the water pump is run off the timing belt. So if you change your belt and not the pump - 10K later your pump could seize up and throw the belt off the pully - effectively ruining your engine just the same as if your belt had broken. On a 2.8 the pump is run off the toothed serpentine belt and not the timing belt so it is not such a major deal.
