Default 03 3.0 Check engine light.

Hey everyone.
My girlfriend has a 03 3.0 and the check engine light keeps coming on. Its still under warntee and so she took it in for service. The dealership told her it was because her gas cap wasnt on tight. (I didnt believe it) They reset the code and it was fine for about 2 weeks and now its back on. Does anyone know what it could be? The local dealership stinks they talk to her like she is clueless because she is a chick. She has brought it in for a few other items and they always give her the run around about fixing it. What do they care. They are getting paid for it.

Thanks for your replies.

next time you take it in and yes the gas cap can turn the light on but without the fault code "which they should have gave a print out on request" so ask for that and put the codes here and we can help find the real problem

I know that it "could happen" but now this is the second time its happened. It would make more sense if it came on right after a fillup but it didnt turn on for 4 days later. I might be bringing it in for the next service I will tell them I want the codes. Does the loose gas cap have a special code?

it does have its own code like every sensor on the car "its better if you didn't know so we can catch them out", tell them to replace the seal on the gas cap or fit a new one.

you can see a list of codes its well documented

The link that you gave me has a few web pages. I'm not familiar with these codes. Is there a web page that is just for Audi's? I've never used "codes" before.

If they tell me its the same problem I'll tell them that I want a new cap/seal.

P0 code is generic to all make of cars "basic fault" but other codes could be hidden I call them soft codes and they are logged on the ECU

So when they give me the code if its a "P0" code then its a generic one. But if its something else I'll post it and hopefully someone will know what it is.

Thanks for all your help.

the light is on now? go to autozone and get the code, its free. post it here and we can tell you if its an evap emissions code, which can be caused by a loose gas cap. and usually it takes a few days for the car to idettify a pressure leak, so the light coming on days later is feasible.

first thing i would do is check the gas cap, is it tight? is there an o ring? is it seated right?

If you want you can run the car over to Autozone. They will scan the car and tell you your fault code for free. It's easier than scheduling an appointment with the stealership.
