Default #1,2,3 MISFIRE---very bad

hi everyone...this is my first post so bare with me

i own a mechanic shop here in toronto and i have in my possession and audi that will not get fixed.

the car is a 98 Audi A4 2.8L....it came in with code reading, multiple misfire, cylinder 1 misfire, cylinder 2 misfire, cylinder 3 misfire.
so we did what most would do, we checked timing and spark and compression.

let me tell you, someone had done work to this car before and totally screwed EVERYTHING up.... the timing was off from the belt point of view and also was 2 teeth off on the chain in the back. so we fixed that problem put the car together and the problem did not go away.

so we dismantled the car again.

this time we found the timing tensioner roller wasnt installed properly from the "other" mechanic so we fixed that...put the car together and the problem still remained

so we dismantled the car again

this time we resorted to the only other problem that could be...the cylinder head...we took it out sent it to the machine shop, the ripped it apart and found a broken valve spring inside. EUREKA!!! the party began we were thrilled we finally found the problem we put the car togehter staerted it up and guess what...same problem

we thoguht it could be the computer what else...so we put in a spare one to see what will happen...no change

SO everyone, im turning to you for some help...becasue im all out of ideas and im tired of looking at this vehicle..as much as i love audis, this one makes me want to throw things....so please, somebody help me [:@]

thank you,
Shaunt Hovnanian

Did you ever think about coil packs or ICM??? Or did you already verify that there was spark to those cyinders??? You said you checked it, but didnt say what the result was... What about wiring to coil pack?? Were there any other fault codes along with the missfire one's?

yes there was and still is a spark to those cylinders. we desided to chaneg the entire coil pack and the wiring, so threfore it is all brand new.

one thign we did find that is quite strange is that the chain tensioner solonoid pug has on power and 2 grounds. so our hypothesis is that one of the grounds is being sent somewhere else, being shorted and being sent back. does anyone know where this second ground may be going?

and no..there were no otehr codes that we remeber

If you dont have any tech advice to help this guy out keep your comments to yourself. There is nothing wrong with 96-98, especially when the 30v started in 98. Any 8-10 yr old car is going to have its problems.

ok ladies and gents

i appretiate the help, but the problem is our brainstorming in real time and interenet time is alot differetn and we have stummbled upon the solution..let me tell you

the tensioner solonoid we were tellign you abotu was being shorted which means it wasnt work ing properly there for it was throwing the timing all out of whack...

once we manually grounded the plug the solonoid engaged and the car ran beauifully
when we took the manual ground off...misfiring began

so now all we have to do is find the short, rewire, and we're golden

thanks again everyone...hope i can help you guys out sometime soon

so long for now

Glad you figured it out! Is there anyway you can get a picture of the part/bad ground so other members can refer to this if they have a similar problem??

Sorry not everyone has 30k to drop on a brand new Audi.

And FYI, I am madly in love with my 98 A4, so eat a fat one.

WELL GENTS, a new problem as arose...

can you tell me where the computer gets its siganl to activate the hydrolic tensioners on the cylinder head

we tested teh wiring from the solonoid to the computer, everythign is good

the solonoid has power but is missing ground signal from computer

so once again

my question is....where is this origional signal being recieved from byt the computer??
