hello, my girlfrind is set on buying 96'-01' audi a4 and i have a couple questions before deciding which to buy:

which engine is more reliable and has fewer rapairs? (1.8 turbo or 2.8)

are there any years to avoid between 96' and 01'?

any feedback would be great.

If you search you will find more info, but it sounds like she should get a 99 to 01 2.8 Quattro, I only say this because in theory the 2.8 is more reliable... It 1.8 has way more potential as far as mods go but i doubt she’s highly interested in modding and would be satisfied with the power of the stock 2.8..... IMO she should get a 99.5 or newer cuz it’s the better body style with one piece headlights and better tails

 

Hey John.. Let me save myself and others some time and just go ahead and direct you towards the search link at the top of the page.. Type in what you want to know and you will find tons of results for 1.8t/2.8 differences. The basics are this:
1.8t is a 4 cyl turbo with only 150-170 hp stock.. BUT it can be EASILY modded with chips and bigger turbo's to get around 300 hp.
2.8 -v6- around 200 hp stock, but not easily or cheaply moddable. There are a few small things you can do , but your not going to see significant gains without a $upercharger.

2.8 is going to be more reliable, as in you can neglect it and incur few problems.. The 1.8t requires more attention and a diciplined maintnance shcedule...

The 01 1.8t comes with 170hp engine as opposed to 150hp for 97-00 models.
