I think I might go with an S4, they are already fast out of the box but would be a pain to work on. Also my 1.8t has 212000mi on it but runs perfect with no CEL if I could find a reputable shop nearby Cleveland I might consider getting it built. How much do you think a built bottom end would run with parts?

Is your car paid off? Do you have low insurance? Do you like to work on your car? If the answer is NO to any of them, the S4 is not for you.

yes, it's faster stock then the 1.8t. Mod for mod, the S4 will still faster. Remember, a S4 with turbo back & a chip is almost 300whp. With K04's & fueling is close to 400whp. But it will cost much more then the 1.8t.

Working on the S4 is a PITA, & parts cost a little more then the 1.8. Reliability seams to be around the same, they both have issues. The good thing on the 2.7 is the engine seams to be bomb proof. You don't have to worry about a rod going through the side of the block. But the 2.7 is plagued with vacuum leaks, & failing sensors. But that isn't to hard to fix, just get better DV's & the APR bi-pipe. Both have poor MAF's. But general maintaince will be more on the 2.7, it does have more spark plugs, more oil, etc...

The body & interior, is nicer on the S4, & HID stock, navi stock (kind of sucks).

Its always nice when we have a sleeper, deff 1.8 BT setup and go for the 400HP mark, terrorize anything on the road.

I like B6 S4 seats and am trying to source them from a boneyard. Otherwise interior is nearly identical from B6 S4 to my A4. Outside can be made to look the same easily and not too expensive.
B6 A4's after, I think, model year 2003 come 6spd, so no worries there. Most I know with a B5 S4 have very fast cars but huge insurance bills. And they are constantly fixing something. I love their cars when running, but there always seems to be something to fix. After inital bugs on my kit and getting it tuned, it runs like a dream and never has problems. Most I know with BT 1.8t on B6's say the same thing. Where they get the "not reliable" tag from is beyond us, as we have no problems.
A well-tuned B6 A4 1.8t big turbo is a great car. If you're not bumping timing and boost beyond levels of what the internals can handle just to get 20hp on race gas or something, you can have a 340+hp/tq pump gas car that drives as well in traffic as it does on the open road. But you aren't getting a B6 to that point for under 5-6 grand of add ons. Which, still shouldn't be as expensive as a B6 S4.

well... i would say stay with the 4cyl.... easier to work on, cheaper parts,WAY better gas millage!, and it would definetly take some time to sell and find an s4 in your likings....
at least you already have quattro.... and i'm sure it would be soo much fun spanking s4's with less cylinders...plus i always love the sound of a huge turbo project...
big turbo = [sm=smiley27.gif]

I was told the upgrading the turbos on an s4 is a 20hr job. Damn!! unless you do it yourself the cheapeset realiabel shops I can find are $60/hr thats 1200 in just install not to mention an additional 1700 for the turbos and thats just if you go K04. Modding an S4 is a completely different ball game. We're playing 2 hand touch, they are playing rugby.

Come on, no it's not! New K04's with inlet pipes are $2500, getting them installed is usually around 25hrs labor $3000 for a high end shop.

Most S4's get a full STG III package, fueling, maf, k04's inlets, & new clutch, or torque converter, for around $10k.

Did you mean $1500? That's more like stock K03's but who would really do that?

$15000 joke huh… sell your car and get RS4 then…
It was done a lot chipper, 1500-1700 for turbo then another 500-600 for intercooler and all the pipes… most of the work can be done easily at home if you have right tools …
