Default 1.8T Mod questions - help

Hi,

A bit about me: I live in Vancouver, B.C. and was looking at importing an A4 1.8T. Originally I was trying to import an S4 but they don't allow that to be imported, as an MR2 owner I want something fast but also I want AWD and to move up in luxury (not to mention get a car with a backseat and enough space for me to fit).

I have been checking craigslist seattle every day looking for the right "2002 A4 1.8T" and once I find it I would like to do some mods

*My priority in doing these mods is to keep the car healthy, it will be my daily driver and I don't won't to wreck it
*My goal is 280HP ish, but that can easily change depending on what mods I can do, but I don't wanna do anything crazy like 400hp (not knocking it, just not for me)
*I live in Vancouver, and if there are any A4 owners that have experience with modding and can lend a hand/advice (mechanical or importing wise), let me know. The more stuff I do myself or with help as I have minimal experince, the more $$$ I save and the more I can do, keeping in mind my first priority of keeping the car healthy as I plan to keep it a long time

My Questions:
What mods can I do for the 1.8T, what is a ballpark cost and what HP gain will I get?
Anybody on the forum in Vancouver?

Mods I have read about so far that I may be interested in doing (please correct me if I'm wrong about details):
Stock 2002 1.8T = 170hp
Cold air intake + exhaust + chip = +30hp = 200hp (~$1500 in parts, labour can be done from home except exhaust?)
K04 turbo upgrade kit w/ injectors = +40hp = 240hp (kit is ~$1200ish, but I'd probably need to take it in for labour to install)

What other mods and turbo's would you guys reccommend, is 280hp a reasonable goal considering I don't want to wreck my ride or spend 10's of thousands on mods?

Thanks for any help

I would think if you want 280hp out of an A4 you need a bigger turbo than k04. 280hp is my goal too and I plan on getting GT28R turbo kit.

290hp but $3695 plus install, pretty pricey

Would putting a turbo with that much boost mess with the engine? Would more $$$ need to be spent equipping the rest of the car to handle this (engine/transmisson)?

Anytime you add aftermarket parts to your car you are taking a risk of more things to break. Actually I don't think its that bad of a price. everything is bolt on and comes with the software. The only other thing they recommend buying is an intercooler and exhaust. Just remember quality products are going to be more expensive, and to me personally I would rather spend the little bit of extra money now and having a little bit of piece of mind and not worrying every day if my car is going to make it to work because of the $200 turbo I put on it.

than you'll want to upgrade to a gtrs elim
*I live in Vancouver, and if there are any A4 owners that have experience with modding and can lend a hand/advice (mechanical or importing wise), let me know. The more stuff I do myself or with help as I have minimal experince, the more $$$ I save and the more I can do, keeping in mind my first priority of keeping the car healthy as I plan to keep it a long time
if you didn't live over 1000 miles away i would help you out lol
My Questions:

Mods I have read about so far that I may be interested in doing (please correct me if I'm wrong about details):
Stock 2002 1.8T = 170hp correct
Cold air intake + exhaust + chip = +30hp = 200hp (~$1500 in parts, labour can be done from home except exhaust?) intake will add no horsepower. chip and exhaust will add ~40hp so you'll be ~215hp and 255ft lb
K04 turbo upgrade kit w/ injectors = +40hp = 240hp (kit is ~$1200ish, but I'd probably need to take it in for labour to install) not what you want to do. 2001+ a4's come with a k03s which is like in between a k03 and a k04. adding a k04 would add like 5hp from what the k03s is capable of. so if your were thinking about this route your better option is a bigger injector file. 235hp and 275 ft lbs are what APR says you'll get and then with an exhaust and tp/hfc the numbers will be a little higher

What other mods and turbo's would you guys reccommend, is 280hp a reasonable goal considering I don't want to wreck my ride or spend 10's of thousands on mods?

Thanks for any help

a gtrs elim would be the easiest and would put you above your goal. you just have to get the turbo, injectors, and software. a tp/hfc and fmic are strongly suggested as well.

Thanks for the help guys, looks like the bigger turbo is the way to go, I was worried about a bigger turbo adding more lag, but reading up the lag seems negligible.

So when I find one on craigslist, I'll be back asking you guys where I can get the whole gtrs elim kit and exhaust Hopefully someone on this forum knows where to get a good deal on some quality stuff.

Hopefully I can figure out how to install some of this myself (or find a forum member in BC), as labor for getting a turbo kit installed seems pretty steep

I'll keep you posted when I find the car

Yeah, seems like you want to go with anything Eliminator. The numbers you listed about the stock and ko4 upgrade are rated at the crank and so 22% or so drivetrain loss, etc. So if you want 280 crank hp or wheel hp im not sure, but doesnt matter really. The cheap way to go on anything bigger then a Ko4 is the eliminator setups. According to cincy (member here) they dont output the same as a full big turbo setup, because of the exhaust manifolds etc. But the eliminators will do more then a good job when it comes to putting down more power.

Where you will find your Eliminator setups. Car specific tab.

I remember reading that theres a guy on audizine that gets deals on the elim turbos, but someone will have to check that for me.

But, search! BT's have been discussed quite a bit here, and zine has a bunch of guys running bt's if you want to wander over there.
