Default 1.8T problem.

Hi, I have a 96 1.8T. The performance was very erratic (no boost, idle up and down, engine ran on after ignition sitched off) . Have replaced plugs, fuel pump & filter, temp sensor, had the throttle cleaned out but still no good. I took it to local audi specialist who put it on the computer and no faults showing and said probably MAF which i replaced. The car seemed a bit better and a couple of days later it was flying, loads of boost,so I thought it was fixed. A couple of days later it has got worse again. Now no boost and difficult to start.
The car whistles pretty much all the time (more noticable when the engine is cold) and it seems to come from around the turbo. Could this be a symptom of the problem? Maybe an air leak? I have had a quick look at the pipes but cant see anything wrong. I would be very grateful for any advice or hints of where i should be looking if its a leak or any other suggestions. Cheers Dean.

Got to be a leak.

Check the air intake to turbo, turbo to smic, hoses off the dv, hoses going to SMIC, and from SMIC to throttle body.

tighten these all up, let car run, and listen closely to engine with head in engine bay, while reving the car by hand using the throttle linkage.

Some how you were good for a little while! Probably all that boost blew off another hose. Could also try to clean MAF, but you said it was replaced, not sure that would help much. Do you use a standard air filter, or a cone or drop in Oiled filter?

Could also be the DV. Since it is intermittent, you may want to test it, there is a test for a bad DV posted here somewhere.

he SAID cheers, thats a dead give away. Anyways definetly check your vac lines ( 1 goes to the dv and the other if for the fuel pressure reg. ) I had a similar problem that was caused by those being brittle and broken.

yea there are. Their market does have access to the outside world. I doubt there are many Audi's in N. Korea though.
