Default 1996 A4 2.6 Losing spark?

Wondering if anyone can help me out. I have an 1996 A4 2.6 that seems to be losing spark. I can drive the car fine for a while without any problems. However, after a while, the engine seems to splutter a bit if I'm at low speed, and once I put my foot on the gas any more, the engine dies. I presume it is then flooding, because then it take 5-10 mins before it starts again (also, it starts again easier if I hold the gas straight to the floor which I think cuts off the fuel). This problem is intermittant, but usually happens after I have been driving the car for at least 15 mins, so I think temperature may play a part. Once the car starts again, it usually doesn't last long before it happens again.

The first mechanic I took it to suspected the crank angle sensor. This has been replaced and did not resolve the problem.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks - Michael

2.6?? you mean a 2.8L right??
"(also, it starts again easier if I hold the gas straight to the floor which I think cuts off the fuel)." no, wrong way round, it gives the engine more fuel.
i would of thought that if its flooding you should be able to seea bit of fuel dripping from the exhaust.
also, if its a missfire your CEL will light up, same if your flooding the engine (which aint good for the cats).
the problem at hand sounds like something is overheating.

Do you have any diagnostic trouble codes for us? The 2.6L was available n Europe so he's right...

sounds more like over fueling to me and the coolant temp sensor could be the problem but that's a guess so have it scanned for codes and dont keep putting new things in there in the hope you will resolve it because then it becomes a money pit,

crank sensor wouldn't cause this problem that was a bad diagnosis by your mechanic and this is where the money become the issue

Thanks for the advice. My last mechanic said that no codes were showing up on the scanner. I'm dropping it off at the Audi Service centre this weekend. Hopefully they can sort it out without sending me bankrupt!

Nice work Dave. Audi called me this morning to say it was the coolant temp sensor. Not too expensive to fix either (phew). Wish I had taken it to these guys in the first place rather than wasting a crank angle sensor!
