I am considering purchasing a 98 A4 with a nonturbo 2.8 engine. Is this engine easier to chip upgrade or is a 1.8 turbo easier?

the 1.8 is much easier, a 1.8 with just a chip will match the power of the 2.8 30v. along with the 1.8 provide extensive mod choices. the 2.8 is very limited as far as mods, and can't be chiped (without paying 500$ for getting only 10-15hp). 2.8's are limited to exhuast, intake, ud pullys, supercharger. without going full fab on a custom turbo setup. and s/c will also run you several grand.

 

they're both "easy" but chipping a 2.8 gives you roughly 8-12 hp whereas chipping a 1.8T gives you 40-50hp
