Default 1st gear jerky

Hello,

i got a audi 1.9 Tdi 1996 and it seems to be very jerky accelerating in 1st gear. Accelerating in all the other gears are ok.

it seems to get worse after I have driven alot.

so whats up?

It's normal for first gear to be jerky.

If you're new to this car, the jerkiness will get better as you get used to driving it. The reason it's jerky is the gear ratio.

thanks dafrazi.

but if it was the gear ratio, it wouldn't get worse after I drive it a couple of dozen miles. right?

when you start the car cold accelerating in first is fine. Its not so much accelerating as manovering slowly in first gear that is the prob.

Yes, the A/C robs the motor of power and gives you worse gas mileage. It could be jerky just because the A/C pump is on. Try it with the a/c off and see if that helps.

Are you new to manuals? Maybe you just need some practice?
