Im looking at a 96 2.8 quattro, guy says it has 125k miles. The guy ALSO says that it the motor runs but "it has a slight miss on 1,2,3" due to the timing belt braking, and that the valves are out of alignment, SAID that the valves are NOT broke.. My thought is that when he installed the timing belt, he didnt index it correctly and its off one tooth...

That being said, how likely is that? Also, whats the worst case senario? the engine "runs".. so keep that in mind. And how much does it cost to fix? The car is a good price, even if I need a new head.. and.. next question.

He also said that it "needs a new clutch" that it justwont grab, as if its not in gear..

What do you guys think? I have lots of time, patience, money, and experience to fix it.. Im just not familiar with THESE particular cars...

It's got 18's 7's and 9's. that look really cool.. needs a paint job, and the interior is perfect. Its also a quattro. He wants 2k for it. I have a $7500 budget.

Likely has bent valves. No way he can know how much damage he has done until he pulls the heads off.

I'd pass.

He is telling you the truth. The valves are not "broke" (they are bent) and the valves are out of alignment (true, they are bent) therefore he is not lying. From the research i have done on this forum and elsewhere and from personal experience on my 1.8tqm THE VALVES ARE BENT! if it was automatic possibly not. Maybe the 2.8 is not an interference engine. I am not very familiar with the 2.8 but if it is an interference engine like the 1.8 I can guarantee you some of them are bent. The head work will run you between $700-$1200 more probably on the upper end that would include your headset/bolts. This does not include labor. If you know how to do this work I would saythe replacementlabor is worth at least 20 hours. If it was me I would be really pushed to pay more than $1500. Typically in situations like this $500 take it or leave it. + tranny work? FTS yeah $500 or just buy the wheels from him.

 

Skip it for sure engine troubles is one thing, engine AND tranny troubles is another. Please dont buy it!If you have a $7,500 budget, you can do a hell of a lot better no question.

 

Ahh but for that 7500 I want...

the best thing for me to do is buy someones car that already has almost everything I want..

PS.. Has anyone ever parted an a4 out? I used to do it to old porsche's all the time (damn parts are worth 3x the cost of purchasing a car that had cosmetic damage.. )

 

Please to christ don't get involved with an Audi that has engine issues... Buy a clean cut car even if its gonna require you to save up a little and mod down the road. You'll be thanking us when you have driven your car more days than its been broken. Beleive me, its not worth buying a troubled car.

I'd pass. It's a very costly and time consuming repair.

I had a 99 2.8 with a 145,000 miles and the timing belt broke when I tried starting the car one afternoon, so I didn't think the valves were bent. The dealer didn't think so either, so I hadthem repair the timing belt and replace the water pump and etc which was $1400 with Audi labor costs. But the car still wouldn't start and went into the engine and 2 values were bent and then they quoted me another $6,000-$7,000 to fix the 2 cylinder heads including 20-25 hours of labor. It was ridiculous.

I just ended up buying a new Audi.

Pass, I would not mess around with buying an older Audi with timing belt and cylinder head issues.

 

I would do a compression test to confirm the valves are bent but as it runs it sounds like valves might be ok, get fault codes to see if the misfire is electrical
