Default 2000 A4 - 109k / 50k on the engine? UPDATED: With pics

So my neighbor's bro-in-law has an A4 for sale and I happen to be in the market for one. He's got a 2K A4. He said the engine was just replaced. Dunno why. Said the engine has 50k on it. The car has 109. The informational panel on the dash is going out. The clutch is slipping - although the fluid is low. I'm gonna take it out in a bit and top it off. He's letting me have it for a week to see if I like it. Said he wants 6 grand for it.What should I look for? I'm going to put it through MD State Inspection this week to see what else it needs. It's obvious that it needs tires. What else should I be checking out?Pics to come...

Here's the pics. Someone please tell me what that plug is?

Sorry they're links. I'm apparently an idiot today and can't figure out how to embed them.

Nice car. I have the same year and color.

I can't tell what the connector is or even where it is. Give me a bit more info on where the connector leads, and back out on the photo so I can see where it is.

My first guess is the outside temperature sender but can't be sure

Thanks for the reply! The connector was right on top of what I believe to be the clutch fluid reservoir. On the driver's side of the car right up front. No matter though. We got pulled over in the car yesterday while test driving it. The tags are suspended due to his failure to take the car to emissions testing. Before that happened, we took it to Carmax to get it appraised. It's 5K. He wanted 6. I would have only offered him 2500 for it. I know it's only a 6 year old car, but the dash was out, the clutch seemed to be slipping, it needed tires, and the check engine notice was always on. I would have never been able to get it past MD State emissions testing with that light on.Anyway, this has been useful for one thing. I'm going for an A4. The wife and I were tossing the the idea of an A8 or A6, and an Allroad, but I'm sold on the A4.Now I need to find one for less than 15 that I like.

There are plenty to be had for less than 15. You might even get away with an 02 for that price.

I noticed that! Thanks!!So, I told him to come get the car today. It would have been 5000 firm for it. I mean, that's how much he can get from Carmax for it, so why even bother negotiating? After having the engine replaced and the perpetual CEL, that worries me. Again, MD state doesn't allow vehicles to pass with a CEL.So, I'm looking for an A4. The wife wants an AllRoad, and we saw a good deal on one. But I don't think I'm going that route yet. I want a manual transmission. We'll get her the Allroad later. Thanks for all the input guysit's really appreciated. What do I look for on an A4? The timing belt @ 60k as with the other Audis, I assume? What else? Should I go with a Turbo or a 2.8 or 3.0? (What year did the 3.0 start?)
