2001 A4 2.8 quattro with 135K miles
Hi,
I'm looking at an exceptionally clean 2001 2.8 quattro. It has the auto tranny. My only concern is that it has 135K miles. The guy selling it commutes 100 miles a day round trip to work and back (I know where he lives and works as he's local), so they are highway miles. I also know where he has the car serviced and he has all records. He had the timing belt and water pump changed at 90K (preventative).
I understand the 2.8 is more reliable than the 1.8 which is important to me. Any reason this well cared for car can't get another 50K miles or am I looking at trouble? He's asking $9K which seems reasonable.
Any reason I should steer clear of it or shall I just write the check?

Hi there, I just joined this forum today and figured I could help you with a bit of insight. I'm only 16 and have just within the last week purchased my first car. Its an a4 2.8 with 52k miles very clean for 12500$. Ive been doing craploads of research on these cars and have looking for awhile. While the 2.8 is a reliable engine compared to the 1.8T, any car will have some problems at 135k miles. If he hasnt had to many problems then i'd say not to worry about it too much but definately get it checked by your local Audi dealer. For about 200$ they will go over the car with a fine toothe comb (money well spent). Also, 9000$ sounds really steep to me. I almost purchashed a very clean 2000 with 78k miles for 9000$ about a month ago. Id say if hes not willing to negotiate the price then keep searching. Whatever you decide good luck to you!

Thank you for your reply SenorMcNasty!
My final decision is between this car and a 2001 Saab 9-3 Turbo 5 speed with 67K miles for the same price.
Both are still available and I am not sure which way to go.

I would! I'd love to! If I could find that around here I'd snap it up. I love the Audi A4's. I'm just limited that I can't travel very far to get a car and I need a second car soon, so some great ebay deal far away is no good to me, ya know. I'm limited in what I have to buy. :-(

i understand that you have a limited time/area to buy your car in, but you really shouldnt rush it. i spent a long time researching a4's and eventually found my car, which was well worth the price and in great condition at 100k miles. $9k is getting up there for 135k miles, but if you drive it around and take it into a mech it could be a good buy. just make sure its all that you want and not gonna start breaking down on you. i can tell you there were a couple cars i was interested in, until i looked into them more and realized they werent as well kept as they looked

That Saab sounds like a good deal but if you like the A4s more dont settle theres TONS of these around! A few sources I found very helpful when I was searching are www.Autotrader.com as well as The Want Advertisor and varios other magazines/booklets that you can find at most corner stores. The magazines usually have cars that are close by and you can set a zip code on autotrader.com. I dont know if you have already checked these sources out but trust me don't settle I probably went to see 50 cars in a few months before finding mine.

Oh by the way a good idea to see if a car is over/underpriced is by visiting http://www.kbb.com. By entering some info you can get an average selling price for pretty much any car in any shape.
