The story is that when the B6 was first introduced in 2001, Audi began the task to design a coupe off the A4 sedan. Later, the A4 Cabriolet was introduced (designed by a different project team). The reception of the Cabriolet was well received, so they supposedly scrapped the coupe project (based on the sedan) and began on a new coupe project (based on the cabby).

I like the idea of a hardtop A4 coupe that folds down to a cabby. That would work well in the Northern climate areas.

I believe it was all done in-house.
