3.0 or 1.8
I am looking to get into an A4 but i am having a hard time with the 3.0 or the 1.8 i like the turbo but i also like the 6 spd... as what ever i get will not stay stock for lang which is the better to buy to mod? obviously the turbo would be somewhat endless but how are the 3.0's i am looking at the 2002 MY b/c i like that body style i want a S4 but i really cant afford a 2004 s4 to get the body style i like so i think im going with a 2002+ A4
what kinda gains can i expect from say a chip intake new intercooler and exhaust? these would be the things i would probably do first. i know the bhp is like 170 i think?
also what is the stock psi? can i put a boost controller on there and raise the pres.?

heres the smart thing to do.
Chip is always the first thing followed by a Dv (diverter valve) yes you need this
spark plugs, FPR (fuel pressure regulator) and oil change to run smoothly
That will bump your hp and tq quit a bit
Afterwards if your still looking for performance (sound wise)
Exhaust with 2.5 custom or from a reputable maker such as apr or lltek
That will increase throttle response
Intakes dont do **** for the turbo models so going with a new air filter would be a good choice
your looking at alot more tq than hp but thats what really matters anyway especially for an awd car
at 25% drivetrain loss with the awd system you can calculate the est hp.
Depending on what more you want you can decide but thats pretty much the route alot of people with an a4 go and are very happy with it turnout.

You can get a 1.8T with a 6 spd... Not sure if it is just in the ultrasports, or if it is all 2004 A4's...
Well, I just checked cars.com and it looks like the 5 spd manual was no longer an option in 2004... it was either a 6 spd manual, 5 spd tip, or that crazy CVT.
So if you can afford a 2004 A4... you can get the 1.8T and still get your 6 spd.

1.8t cheaper parts, easy modding+faster+lighter, more ppl own them so if you have any question it will be easier to find your answer

3.0 bigger engine powerful, expensive to modding+heavir+less people have 3.0 and NO TURBO +expensive to have it installed[sm=badidea.gif]
1.8t [sm=laughat.gif] 3.0=1.8t all the way
