I have a 2001.5 1.8T Quattro, 5-speed.

I'm at 489** miles right now, and I'm wondering at what point the car is due for service? It says "Service in 100 miles" on the gauge display at start-up. I just changed my oil about 100 miles ago, but I am wondering what to expect from the next service? Anything other than a general inspection? I'll be taking my car to my independant mechanic so I don't get raped by the dealership.

If the car isn't over 4 years old the service is free.

It's 4 years or 50000 miles whichever comes first. So you better do the service before 50000 miles mark.

I'm not the original owner, so is it still free? I've got 1000 miles or so before I hit 50k.

If the car was origonally sold on 7/18/2001 or later it's free.
