Default 5spd Problem?

97 Audi 2.8L A4. I noticed when in 1st gear I hear a chatter type noise. Once I'm in 2nd the noise stops (*it does not happen in any other gear including reverse). Is this the clutch or something else in the trans (I don't believe its engine related).

uh ooh...if it's a fairly loud clicking sound, that's not good....i had the same noise coming from my 12V, it was my first gear synchro...replacing the synchro basically means a tranny rebuild...i went with a used tranny cause it was cheaper. hope that's not your problem

Crap it is a pretty noticable noise... how much did the trans cost? []

i ended up paying 4 grand after everything (labor, new driveshaft, + a few random little things)

www.car-part.com has a ton of 5-speed trannys for cheap, if you can find someone to install it for you

get it checked out at a mechanic, but don't tell him anything about suspecting a synchro or tranny issue at all, let him diagnose it completely on his own.

Ya at first I thought 6k for this car was really good since the timing belt, water pump, and other stuff has already been taken care of about 10k miles ago (car is at 96k). Now I'm pretty pissed and feel royaly ripped off that I have to put money into it

it won't cost you four grand, if you do enough research and call enough shops, you can probably get it done for 2500, maybe even 2 grand...where are you located?
